The Outer Banks has two stories the rest of the country knows. In 1587 a colony landed on Roanoke Island and was gone by the time the supply ship returned. In 1903 two brothers from Ohio flew a powered machine for twelve seconds off a dune at Kill Devil Hills. Both happened within twenty miles of each other, and most visitors drive past both on the way to the beach.
